VHS to DVD, Done Properly

We'll be upfront: for most families we recommend USB or MP4 files, because they play on phones, smart TVs and computers, they're easy to share, and they never scratch. But if a disc suits you better, for the DVD player in the lounge room or for grandparents who'd rather just press play, we do VHS to DVD properly. Long tapes are split across as many discs as they need so nothing is compressed, and every DVD order includes the MP4 files as well, from $24 a tape plus $12 per disc.

Why Long Tapes Go Across Multiple DVDs

A DVD holds about 2 hours of video at full quality. Squeezing a 3 or 4-hour tape onto one disc means compressing the picture, and you can see it: softer faces and blocky movement. We don't do that. A long recording is split across as many discs as it needs, at $12 per disc, so every minute plays back at full DVD quality. A tape's recorded length can only be known once it has been played all the way through, so the number of discs is confirmed at the end of the job.

DVD or USB: Which Should You Choose?

Choose USB or MP4 if you want to watch on a smart TV, laptop or phone, share clips with family, or keep a backup. Choose DVD if the people watching are most comfortable with a DVD player. Can't decide? You don't have to: the MP4 files come with every DVD order anyway. Compare every format on our VHS to digital conversion page.

Frequently Asked Questions:
VHS to Digital and DVD Conversion

How much does VHS to DVD conversion cost?

$45 for a single tape, $39 each for 2–4, $35 each for 5–10, $32 each for 11–20, $28 each for 21–30 and $24 each for 31 or more, GST included, plus $12 per DVD disc. Every price covers up to 3 hours of footage per tape, and the MP4 files are included with every DVD order.

How many DVDs will one VHS tape need?

One disc holds up to 2 hours. Most home videos fit on a single disc, and a longer recording is split across two or more. A tape's recorded length can't be read from the label, so the number of discs is confirmed once the tape has been played all the way through.

Why don't you fit a long tape onto one DVD?

Fitting more than 2 hours onto one disc means compressing the picture, which makes faces softer and movement blocky. We keep every disc at full quality, so a long tape goes across as many discs as it needs at $12 per disc.

Should I choose DVD or USB?

For most families we recommend USB or MP4 files: they play on phones, smart TVs and computers, are easy to share, and don't scratch. DVD is the better choice if the people watching prefer a DVD player. You don't have to choose: every DVD order includes the MP4 files too.

Do I get digital files as well as the DVD?

Yes. Every DVD order includes an MP4 of each tape. If you also want the archival AVI or MOV master, just ask; it is available at the same price. Every original tape comes back to you.

How long does VHS to DVD conversion take?

Most orders are ready in 7–10 business days from the day we receive your tapes. Tell us your deadline when you book and we'll say straight away whether we can meet it.

Can you convert American or overseas tapes to DVD?

Yes. Tapes recorded in the USA (NTSC) or France (SECAM) cost an extra $11 per tape on top of the standard price. If you're not sure where a tape was recorded, bring it in and we'll check it.

Still have a question about your tapes?

Bring your tapes to any of our drop-offs and we'll look at them and tell you what's involved before anything is charged, or get in touch here.
