What your per-tape price buys

Our price is per tape, not per minute. Many services charge by the 90 minutes or by the half hour, so a full-length family recording ends up costing two or three units. With us, a three-hour tape and a twenty-minute tape are the same price, and there is nothing to add up when the bill arrives.

Up to 3 hours of footage per tape. A standard VHS recording is often the full length of the tape, which is why every price here covers up to 3 hours. Only the rare tape that runs longer costs more — $11 per extra 90 minutes, confirmed with you at the end of the job.
Converted using professional converters, not consumer capture sticks. The difference between a good transfer and a disappointing one is mostly the equipment the tape is played and captured on.
The archival master costs you nothing extra. You receive an MP4 as standard — it plays on any phone, TV or computer. Ask for the archival AVI/MOV master and we'll supply it alongside your MP4 at the same price, so you have both files. Most services don't offer one at all.
Your originals always come back, and there's no charge for blank tapes or transfers we can't complete.
Mixed formats count together. 6 VHS + 8 MiniDV + 4 DVDs is 18 items, so every one of them is priced at $32.

You can supply the USB or hard drive for your digital files, or we can provide one at cost. A USB or a download gives you a file you can copy, share and back up anywhere; a DVD plays in a DVD player and holds about two hours.

How you get your files

Choose whichever suits you. There is no difference in the conversion itself — only in what you take home.

USB or hard drive gives you a file you can copy, share and back up anywhere, on a phone, a computer or a smart TV. Bring your own and there's nothing to pay for it, or we'll supply one at cost.

DVD plays in a DVD player and holds about two hours. If you haven't moved to a smart TV, it is still the easiest way to sit down and watch. We burn a high-quality digital file rather than using a cheap recorder, our discs are not locked or copy-protected, and long recordings are split across discs rather than compressed to fit — so a three-hour tape becomes two discs at full quality instead of one poor one.

Cloud storage is available from $9 for three months if you'd rather have your files online to share with family, or as a second copy alongside a USB.

Whichever you choose, you receive an MP4 as standard. Ask for the archival AVI/MOV master and we'll supply it alongside your MP4 at the same price.

What you're actually paying for

A capture stick and a spare afternoon will get you a file. Whether it is a file worth keeping is a different question, and it is decided almost entirely by what the tape is played back on.

Every tape is converted using professional converters, not consumer capture sticks. MiniDV in particular often has to be played back on a camcorder matching the brand it was recorded on — which is why we hold several. Getting that right is the difference between a clean transfer and one with dropouts you only notice years later.

Mouldy or damaged tapes are assessed free, and quoted before anything is touched. If we can't repair it, there's no charge. And please don't try playing a mouldy or damaged tape at home — that's how a recoverable tape becomes an unrecoverable one. Bring it to us as it is.

Your originals come back every time, there's no charge for blank tapes or transfers we can't complete, and most orders are back with you in 7–10 business days from the day we receive them. Urgent small orders can often be done in a day to a few days — just ask.

How much does it cost to convert a VHS tape to digital in Australia?

Tapes To Digital charges between $24 and $45 per tape including GST, depending on quantity: $45 each for 1 to 4 tapes, $38 for 5 to 10, $32 for 11 to 20, $28 for 21 to 30 and $24 for 31 or more. Is there an extra charge for long tapes?

Not for the vast majority of tapes. Every price includes up to 3 hours of footage per tape, which covers a full-length VHS recording. If a single tape runs longer than 3 hours, the extra footage is $11 per additional 90 minutes, confirmed with you at the end of the job.

What format do I get my videos in, and can I have an archival master?

You receive an MP4 file as standard, which plays on any phone, computer or smart TV. If you would also like the archival AVI/MOV master, ask when you place your order and we'll supply it alongside your MP4 at the same price, so you have both files. It is not sent automatically, so do request it if you want it.

I have VHS, MiniDV and Hi8 tapes mixed together. Do they all count towards the bulk price?

Yes. VHS, VHS-C, MiniDV, Video 8, Hi8, Digital 8, DVDs and audio cassettes are all on the same price ladder, and everything in one order is counted together. For example, 6 VHS tapes, 8 MiniDV tapes and 4 DVDs make 18 items, so every one of them is priced at the 11 to 20 rate of $32.

Are there any extra charges I should know about?

Only these, and each is disclosed before you are charged. A DVD copy is $12 per disc, with one disc per 2 hours so long recordings are split across discs rather than compressed. Tapes recorded in the US (NTSC) or France (SECAM) are $11 extra per tape. Micro audio cassettes are $10 extra per tape. Footage beyond 3 hours on a single tape is $11 per extra 90 minutes. Cloud storage, if you want it, is from $9 for three months. Mould cleaning or tape repair starts at $28 per tape, with a free assessment quoted before any work begins.

What if a tape is blank or cannot be converted?

You are not charged for it. If a tape turns out to be blank, or is unrecoverable, we remove it from your bill. The only exception is a batch that is mostly blank tapes, which still takes real time to check, so a small handling fee may apply, and it is always disclosed before it is charged.

Do I get my original tapes back?

Yes, always. Your original tapes are returned with every order, whether you dropped them off at one of the 12 by-appointment locations across Sydney, Wollongong, Logan, Melbourne, Perth, Canberra and Adelaide, or posted them from elsewhere in Australia.

Why is your price per tape higher than some I have seen advertised?

Because it is a price per tape, not per 90 minutes or per half hour. Many services advertise a low headline figure that covers only part of a full-length recording, then charge again for the rest. Our price includes up to 3 hours per tape, every tape is converted using professional converters rather than consumer capture sticks, an archival AVI/MOV master is available on request at no extra cost, and originals are always returned.
