MiniDV to USB

Most MiniDV collections are years of family footage with no working camcorder left to play them. We convert each tape to an MP4 file and copy the whole order onto USB, ready for a laptop, smart TV or phone. MP4 plays on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android without extra software, and you do not need to send your camcorder. Bring your own USB or we can supply one.

MiniDV to USB is priced like any MiniDV conversion: $45 for a single tape down to $24 each for 31 or more, GST included. HDV MiniDV tapes are priced separately. A download link or hard drive also works for large collections, and your original tapes always come back.

How much does it cost to convert MiniDV tapes to digital in Australia?

Can I play MiniDV tapes without a camcorder?

Not easily. MiniDV was made to be played back in a camcorder, and a lot of families no longer have one that works. The simple answer is to bring the tapes to us exactly as they are. We'll turn them into MP4 files you can watch on your phone, TV or computer, from $24 a tape, and your tapes come back to you with your files.

Do I need to send my camcorder with the MiniDV tapes?

Usually not — we run dedicated MiniDV and HDV equipment, so for most tapes you just send the tapes. But keep your camcorder if you still have it. MiniDV recordings are sometimes fussy about playback: a tape recorded on one brand can track poorly on another, and the reliable fix is to play it back on matching equipment. We hold equipment from several manufacturers and will try more than one before we give up on a tape, and if we think yours needs a machine we don't have to hand we'll contact you rather than return it unconverted. If that happens and we still can't recover it, you're not charged.

What happens if a tape is blank or won't play?

You aren't charged for it. There is no charge for blank tapes, or for transfers that can't be completed successfully — you only pay for footage we actually recover. Tapes needing cleaning or repair before they can be played are quoted separately, from $28 per tape, and we'll always tell you before doing that work.

How long does MiniDV conversion take?

Most orders are ready in 7–10 business days from the day we receive them. If you need something urgently we can often turn a small order around in a day to a few days — tell us your deadline when you book and we'll tell you straight away whether we can meet it. Large collections take longer, and we'll give you a realistic date up front rather than a guess.

What format will my MiniDV tapes be converted to?

Every tape comes back as an MP4 for everyday viewing and sharing. If you also want the archival AVI or MOV master for long-term storage and editing, just ask — it is available at the same price. We can supply your files on a USB we provide, as a download, on a USB you bring in, or on an external hard drive for large collections. A DVD is optional at $12 per disc, and one disc holds up to 2 hours.
